Mitzvah Projects

To be a Jewish adult is to embrace the three pillars of Jewish life: Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Hasadim. Along with preparing for your B’nei Mitzvah, helping make our community a better place is an essential part of reaching this milestone.

In the months leading up to your B’nei Mitzvah, you are expected to complete a project that identifies a need in the Chizuk Amuno community, the greater Baltimore community, or beyond, and takes meaningful action to address it.

As you plan your project, remember that tzedakah and gemilut hasadim are related but distinct mitzvot. While we encourage tzedakah (giving money to those in need), your B’nei Mitzvah project should focus on gemilut hasadim—acts of loving-kindness that involve giving your time and working directly with the people or organizations you are supporting.

Some students begin the process with a project in mind, while others appreciate help exploring ideas. Our Gemilut Hasadim Coordinator, Jayne Gerson, is happy to meet with you and connect you with one of our partner organizations that aligns with your interests. You can reach her at
